Diamonds & Denim - Crazy?

Diamonds & Denim - Crazy?

Last weekend I was invited to a Diamonds and Denim party, in a house facing the ocean. Looking at the invitation where the hostess writes “No presents, please,” I start my mental exercise of what I am going to wear?“ Simple,” says my sister, “wear your best diamond earrings, and anything will look just fine!”She does not realize that while she says that, her eyes are looking through her closet with the expression in her face of “I have nothing to wear!” Right, none has a pair of jeans, a jeans skirt, a jeans top, denim, bon sang! The party is in elegant Quogue, apparently near South and East Hampton. We try everything on, from Cesare Paciotti rhinestones’ sandals, to Abercrombie jeans skirts with holes, and finally decide to wear a simple, impeccable bright pure white Catherine Malandrino dress. My best diamond earrings (my father has been a diamond dealer all his life!) and the denim? Right, a Dolce e Cabbana purse with a locket. Chic, and ready to face the party, I think. As we come to the entrance, a policemen and a security stops us, while white horse caballeros check our cars, names and invitations. I am wearing diamonds, and the caballeros are dressed with ponchos? Well, too late, it’s done. The house is just gorgeous; the fabrics on the wall, stunning; English, Indian, French; around the house tons of wrapped gifts –the guests did not follow the rule. Shakira’s beat with Wycleaf Jean “Hips don’t lie mix” –other never-heard-before–reggae– spreads through the night along a summer breeze of a nearby Hampton ocean. I already feel inebriated and did not even step into the party. At my left, a hostess dressed in a red and blue chiffon Roberto Cavalli outfit with the warmest and sexiest smile I have seen this summer, and Jessica Simpson’s style handmade rhinestones and outrageously pointed leather cowboy boots, welcomes us with a candid “thank you for coming,” showing us around and to the straw cowboy hats of different colors and shapes spread everywhere in the garden ready to be picked up and worn by curious guests. We are kindly asked to feel at home and left for the Bob Sinclair “Love Generation” sound and drums in the middle of the dance floor. I feel at home.Cowboy hat? Maybe… black? Should I wear it or am I a European snob? Am I wearing diamonds or not after all? Diamonds are forever and tonight it’s ok as I am in the Hamptons after all!You know, as a Brazilian so familiar with churrascos, I must tell you how impressed I was when I walked to the food scenario. A Hollywoodian production of uncountable variety of barbecued meats, chicken vegetables, corn, potatoes, sweet potatoes, corn bread (my favorites), all sorts with spices, sauces, dips, guacamoles, chillis. Dozens of Mexican chefs wearing red bandanas around their necks along with dark blue aprons smiling at us –poor tempted diamond and denim guests still human and absolutely attracted by the festive and certainly delicious set up of food delicacies. The dinner was great; the atmosphere, greater. The guests, very hot and certainly creative in their choice of mixing high-end and extremely glamorous brands with glittering stones, bandanas, cowboy straw hats, lanterns, champagne, tequila.Sensuality was in the air, the ocean breeze too.Gnarles Barkley song “Crazy” kept on playing…I suddenly remembered staring at the ocean waves in the middle of the memorable night, about a man that once said to me the same words as the song lyrics: ”And I hope that you are having the time of your life,But think twice, that’s my only advice.”The lyrics go on like this:” My heroes had the heart to lose their lives out on a limb, and all I remember is thinking, I want to be like them.Ever since I was little, ever since I was little, oh, it looked like fun. And it’s no coincidence, I’ve come and I can die when I’m done. May be I am crazy? May be you are crazy?May be we are crazy.”
