God Series in Dubai
This Spring, on March 19 to 22, preceding New York Asia week, seventy dealers exhibited at contemporary art fair in Dubai, an exciting event for the rapidly growing art community of the Middle East and now in its second year.
One of my favorites artists , presented by Rossi & Rossi gallery as part of their commitment to nurture the emerging talents from Asia and bringing them to a wider public, was the work of Tibetan Gonkar Gyatso who currently lives and works in London.
Born in Lhasa in 1961, Gonkar studied fine art at the Central Arts Academy in Bejing, China, and at Central Saint Martins and the Chelsea School of Design in London. His work has been exhibited in London, , Atlanta, Helsinki, Karlsruhe, New Delhi, New York, Washington, Boulder, Los Angeles and Zurich. He has been a fellow at the library of Tibetan Works & Archive, Dharamsala, India, for traditional Tibetan painting studies.
The work of contemporary Tibetan artists transcends national and political barriers and has attracted global attention. They have been trained in traditional and modern disciplines, allowing them to develop media and forms. The resulting fusion of a rich artistic tradition with contemporary elements means that their work is accessible to everyone, whatever their culture or beliefs. Gonkar’s work is held in the Newark Museum, USA, the Pitt Rivers Museum, Oxford, England, Devi Foundation, India, and Crocker Art Museum, California, as well as in various private collections in Europe, Australia, Asia and the USA.
