India’s ancient tradition of Ayurveda says the leaves of the Moringa tree prevent 300 diseases.

Moringa oleifera is the most nutrient-rich plant yet discovered. This humble plant has been making strides in less-developed societies for thousands of years. It provides a rich and rare combination of nutrients, amino acids, antioxidants, anti-aging and anti-inflammatory properties used for nutrition and healing.

The cosmetic company Body Shop (belonging to L’Oréal) has just launched a Moringa bath and body range. Moringa is presented as a “miracle of hydration” on the big advertisement posters placed on the shops windows. Packaging shows white flowers. The origin of the Moringa oil is not indicated (no mention of fair trade). This is one of the first world wide advertisement campaign on a Moringa product.

Moringa Oleifera and its cousin Moringa Stenopetala, the completely -edible- trees (roots included) that produces delicious leaves with 2 times the protein and 4 times the calcium in milk, 3 times the potassium in bananas, and 7 times more Vitamin C than oranges? And pods with 2 times the protein in beans, as well as oil as valuable as olive oil, but with a touch of flax seed oil added, almost as an afterthought? To say nothing about the fact that it has been widely hailed as “a natural multi-vitamin and minerals pill.”

In India Moringa tree product is used as natural antibiotic, an aid in childbirth, for treating liver disorders, and many other uses. Villagers in Oman use Moringa oil to treat stomach disorders. They also use it in perfume and hair oil. In Haiti, villagers boil Moringa flowers in water and drink the tea as a powerful cold remedy. Dried Moringa leaves treat diarrhea in Malawi, Africa. The wood yields a blue dye which was used in Jamaica and Senegal.

Its gum produced from a cut tree trunk has been used in calico printing, in making medicines and as a bland-tasting condiment. Its powdered seeds can be used to clarify honey without boiling and sugarcane juice. Its flowers are a good source of nectar for honey-producing bees. In many countries, Moringa trees are planted in gardens and along avenues as ornamental trees.
The soft, pulp spongy wood makes a poor firewood, but the wood pulp is suitable for making newsprint and writing paper.

Moringa powder in Ghana is very much on fashion, and certifying it becomes necessary to avoid adulterated or bad quality products. There is even the Moringa Association of Ghana to define product standards and a code of good practices, from production to processing, packaging and trade. The Ghana Food Research Institute still needs to look at moisture content, drying temperature and shelf life.

When Ken Brailsford father of herbal encapsulation and founder of Zija International, a healthcare and a network marketing company learned biochemists were calling Moringa the most nutrient-rich plant ever discovered he assembled an outstanding team of business executives, nutritional researchers and product formulators. The smart team took a closer look at its amazing goodness and smartly created Zija, ” The Smart Drink” an astonishingly nutritious dietary supplement designed for full bio-availability by the body.
